The University has access to a limited number of laptops that can be loaned out to students for renewable periods of two weeks. There are simply not enough laptops to go around every student or available budget for ordering more. This scheme should be seen as part of a range of measures to support digitally poor students and not seen as the sole solution to that challenge. Students are able to book learning slots in the Library and PC labs not on timetable to also help access to technology.
The laptop loan scheme is to provide digital capability to disadvantaged students only. Students that need any specialist software requirements should be directed to book a Library or a PC lab slot, or request remote access via VMware Horizon. This loan scheme is not able to support software requests.
Who is the scheme for?
The Laptop loan scheme is ONLY for those students you encounter that are digitally poor and have no access at all to a device where they reside. It is to help resolve issues where the lack of access to a device prevents a student from participating in any way in their learning and teaching.
It is a scheme for any University of Derby student (full time / part time / home / EU / international / FE / UG / PGT / PGR / Apprentice).
It is not open to UDOL students overseas or partnership students.
What is the scheme not for?
The scheme is not designed to support students who are looking for a better device to use.
The scheme is not designed to resolve PC lab availability or resolve any potential timetable issues.
The scheme is not designed to help improve learning resources in a particular discipline.
The scheme is not designed to give access to specialist software (see above solution via VMware Horizon).
How does the scheme work?
The laptops will be loaned out to students through the Library from Monday 5 October. There are several steps that need to be done to issue a laptop to a student:
Step 1
When you see a student in need of a device, remind them firstly of the facility in the Library and PC labs where they can book a study slot to use a device there. If through your discussion it is evident, they are in real need of a device then, login to the following Excel sheet
This will show you how many laptops are currently available and the number of students on the list. If it shows availability, please proceed to Step 2.
Step 2
If there is laptop availability, you need to complete this authorisation booking form.
You will need to ask the student which Library site they wish to collect the laptop from. Please note we no longer have the ability to courier the laptops out. Please also note that in Derby, laptops will be collected from Kedleston Road only (Britannia Mill Library will not be used for this purpose).
Step 3
Once you have completed the form then instruct the student to book a Library slot to collect the laptop.
The student will then be loaned a laptop for two weeks that will auto-renew unless it has been recalled for distributing to another student (if demand is exceeding the number of available laptops).
