If you have been assigned a university MacBook and received an email or notification of your password expiring you will need to follow a different method to those who use windows PC to Reset your password
Why Can't I Use Microsoft Password Reset
While Apple and Microsoft do have some integration like 365 apps and OneDrive being available on Macs, it is not possible at this time to use Microsoft account as a profile on a Mac we have to use what we call Local Accounts and these Local account are unable to Receive password Changes from our Microsoft infrastructure so we have to use a third party software called Jamf Connect
When you change your password through Jamf Connect it will prompt you to update the Local Account password on your Mac and sends the same password to our Microsoft infrastructure to update your Microsoft account, this allows you to use the same password on your Mac for your 365 apps, login for university windows PCs and so on.
If you use Microsoft password reset you may know it as password.derby.ac.uk this will reset the password on your Microsoft Account but your Local account on the Mac wont receive that password change and can potentially lock you out of your Mac.
