If you have been assigned a university MacBook and received an email or notification of your password expiring you will need to follow an alternative method to reset your password
Why Can't I Use Microsoft Password Reset
While Apple and Microsoft do have some integration like 365 apps and OneDrive being available on Macs, it is not possible at this time with our infrastructure to use Microsoft accounts to directly sign into MacOS Devices. We instead use Local Accounts and these Local accounts have their passwords set via Jamf Connect that ties into our Jamf management system for MacOS devices.
When you change your password through Jamf Connect it will prompt you to update the Local Account password on your Mac and sends the same password to our Microsoft infrastructure to update your Microsoft account, this allows you to use the same password on your Mac for your 365 apps, login for university windows PCs and so on.
If you use Microsoft password reset you may know it as password.derby.ac.uk this will reset the password on your Microsoft Account but your Local account on the Mac wont receive that password change and can potentially lock you out of your Mac.
How do I use Jamf connect to change my password
- Locate the Jamf Connect Menu Bar Icon: Find the Jamf Connect icon in your Mac's menu bar.
- Initiate Password Reset: Click the icon and select the "Reset Password" option. This will open a web view in your browser, directing you to your organization's password change page, which is usually hosted by Microsoft Azure AD.
- Follow Azure AD Instructions: You will be prompted to enter your current password and then your new password, following the specific requirements and guidelines set by your organization in Azure AD.
- Synchronisation: Once you successfully change your password in Azure AD, Jamf Connect will detect the change and synchronise your local macOS password with your new Azure AD password. Please note, you will need to enter in your old password to sync the new one.
- Login with New Password: You can now log in to your Mac using your updated password.
I have already reset my password via an alternative method
In this case, the issue can be resolved by performing the following steps:
- Locate the Jamf Connect Menu Bar Icon: Find the Jamf Connect icon in your Mac's menu bar.
- Perform a Manual Sync: Click the icon and select the "Connect" option.
- Enter your current Microsoft Password: A window will appear with your network username prefilled, in the password box enter your current password that you have changed your Microsoft account password to and continue.
- Enter your Local Account Password: A window will appear asking you to enter your "Local Account" password. This is the password you currently use to log into your Mac, and will most likely be your old Microsoft account password from before you changed your password and continue. The window will now disappear.
- Login with New Password: You can now log in to your Mac using your updated password.
