At the university, we prioritise the security and privacy of our students and staff. To protect your data and maintain the integrity of our systems, we block access to third-party applications using university credentials, unless already approved by Digital Solutions and Services, and Governance teams.
Below are some of the key reasons we have chosen to implement this policy.
1. Protecting Your Data and Privacy
Third-party applications may not adhere to the high security and privacy standards. By using your university credentials to sign in, you may unintentionally expose personal information (e.g., email, name, and academic data) to external entities. Blocking these sign-ins helps us safeguard your privacy.
2. Preventing Phishing and Credential Theft
Allowing sign-ins to external apps increases the risk of phishing and credential theft. Malicious actors could use compromised third-party platforms to gain access to your university account, putting sensitive information at risk.
4. Minimising Security Risks
Every additional app connected to your account increases the potential for security breaches. By restricting access to only approved applications, we minimise the risk of unauthorised access and data loss.
5. Providing a Safer Digital Environment
Our goal is to provide a safe and secure digital environment. By enforcing these policies, we can better protect university resources, reduce the attack surface, and ensure a more reliable digital experience for everyone.
What Does This Mean for You?
For external services not managed by Digital Solutions and Services, we recommend using a personal account, as access through your university account will be discontinued once your studies conclude. If a particular blocked application receives significant interest, it may be reviewed for potential approval based on demand and security considerations.
Thank you for helping us keep our university secure.
